Discovering Handa Island: A Nature Lover’s Paradise on the NC500

Hello, fellow wanderers! If you’re journeying along the North Coast 500 and are looking for a slice of untouched beauty, let me introduce you to Handa Island. Just a short boat ride from the charming village of Tarbet, this hidden gem is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates stunning landscapes and rich wildlife.

Handa Island is a nature reserve, and it’s easy to see why it’s so cherished. As you step off the boat, you’re greeted by the fresh sea air and the sound of seabirds calling overhead. The island is home to a staggering variety of birdlife, including puffins, guillemots, and razorbills. If you’re a birdwatcher, you’ll be in heaven! The best time to visit is during the breeding season, from April to August, when the cliffs are alive with activity.

The island itself is a tapestry of rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and lush green hills. There are several walking trails that meander through the landscape, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding sea and the distant mountains of the mainland. One of my favourite spots is the viewpoint at the top of the cliffs, where you can take in the dramatic scenery and watch the waves crash against the rocks below. It’s a perfect spot for a picnic, so pack some snacks and enjoy the tranquillity.

As you explore, keep an eye out for the island’s unique flora and fauna. Handa is home to a variety of wildflowers, and in the spring, the meadows burst into a riot of colour. You might even spot some seals lounging on the rocks or dolphins playing in the waters around the island.

One of the best parts about Handa Island is its sense of peace and isolation. There are no shops or cafés, so it’s a great opportunity to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature. Just remember to bring everything you need for the day, including plenty of water and a good camera to capture the stunning views!

If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the local wildlife, including otters and various seabirds. The island is a true sanctuary, and every visit feels like a special adventure.

So, if you’re planning your NC500 journey, don’t overlook Handa Island. It’s a place where nature reigns supreme, and the beauty of the Highlands is on full display. Trust me, you’ll leave with your heart full and your spirit refreshed. Happy exploring!
